We introduce you to the capital of Kuzbass.

Kemerovo is one of 10 Russian cities to host the Volleyball World Championship. The World Championship will be held from August 26 to September 11, 2022, and Kemerovo will welcome 4 national teams of Group B: ones from Brazil, Japan, Cuba, and Qatar, that will play 6 matches in this city on August 27–29.

For your special benefit, we have prepared the guide to the most beautiful, interesting, and delicious places of the administrative center of the Kemerovo Region.

MUST SEE

Krasnaya Gorka (Red Hill)

The Krasnaya Gorka Museum-Reserve will help you to get acquainted with the history of the city. It’s a one of a kind historical and architectural museum established in 1991 on the site of the Kuznetsk coal basin. The oldest geological monument of the museum called «Gorelaya Gora» (Burnt Mountain) is about 300 years old.

The museum offers a wide range of tours. In a limited time you will get as many new impressions as possible and learn all the necessary things about the city and the region. If you wish to enjoy the beautiful views of Kemerovo, Krasnaya Gorka has a specially equipped observation deck for these purposes that offers a gorgeous view of the city.

Angels Park

The Angels Park is a garden square established on the site of the Winter Cherry Trade Center that burned down in March 2018. That tragedy shocked not only the residents of Kemerovo, but the entire Russia. The garden square was meant to honor the memory of those who died in the fire and at the same time create a beautiful park that would become a place of rest for residents of Kemerovo.

There are fountains, a waterfall, and many green areas on the territory. There is also a light and music tower and a chapel. Sixty pine trees represent 60 adults and children that died in the fire. Due to its unique landscape, the park has become a beautiful and inspired spot attracting all residents of the city.

Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is perfect for admirers of flowers and exotic plants. The garden space is divided into two greenhouses: one is created for a more humid tropical climate, and the other one is for subtropics. The collection of the Botanical Garden includes more than 1,000 various plants from all across the globe. There is also a flower shop where you can buy the flowers you’ve liked at an affordable price. The entrance fee to one of the main Kemerovo landmarks is 250 rubles.

Memory to the Miners of Kuzbass Monument

The monument in the form of a miner holding a heart-shaped piece of coal in his hands is located on Krasnaya Gorka, and considered the architectural and historical symbol of the city. The monument that is about 12 meters high represents the importance and danger of miners’ labor.

One of the most important landmarks in Kemerovo is located on the hill where one can marvel at the gorgeous view of the city. During major holidays, a large number of residents gather at this site to watch festive fireworks.

Leonov Cosmonautics Museum

While waiting for a flight from Kemerovo, you can pass the time at the Cosmonautics Museum, which is the first one in Russian history to be located in the airport. Like the airport itself, the museum is named after Aleksey Leonov, a famous cosmonaut and pilot who was the first person in the world to go into outer space.

Kuzbass Drama Theater

Admirera of theatrical arts are advised to visit one of key theaters of the region — the Lunacharsky Kemerovo Regional Drama Theater, the history of which began in 1934.

The repertoire of this theater located at Vesennyaya Str., 11, includes over 30 performances for the spectators of various age. Here you can find both classical plays and modern dramatic performances.

Coal Museum

This unique museum is located at Rukavishnikov Str., 21, and opened from 10:00 to 18:30, from Tuesday to Saturday. It is the only museum of this kind in Russia, and for a good reason. It is the Kemerovo Region that is one of the leaders in coal mining and supply in Russia. In the museum you can find unique collections of coal, learn mining technologies and nuances of work in a coal mine, as well as the history of the Kuznetsk coal basin development. Also, the museum regularly implements various research and environmental projects.

Tom River Embankment

The Tom River Embankment is one of the most picturesque places in Kemerovo. It is perfect for evening walks due to a very beautiful illumination at the embankment. In the daytime you can buy tickets at the pier and take a speedboat ride or just sit on a bench enjoying the views of Krasnaya Gorka in a serene and relaxing environment.

Landmarks in the Suburbs

Palace of Culture in Salair

To look at the 66-year-old Palace of Culture Salair is so proud of, you will have to take a car and drive for about 3 hours. The building of the Palace of Culture is a true monument due to numerous unique architectural elements. Besides, it still functions successfully.

Tomskaya Pisanitsa Museum

To get to the largest museum-reserve beyond the Urals located in the Yashkinsky Municipal District, not far from the village of Pisanaya, take a bus from the Kemerovo bus station. On the territory of the Tomskaya Pisanitsa Museum, which is about 156 ha, there are 8 permanent exhibitions, a chapel, and a mini-zoo.

The entrance fee ranges from 400 to 500 rubles depending on the day of the week.

Blue Lake in Temirtau

The journey to one of the most picturesque lakes in Russia will take about 6 hours. Due to the absence of fish and the closed system of the lake fed by springs, its water remains transparent all year round. So fans of underwater photography will undoubtedly love this place.

Blue Lake has its own «landmark»: a few years ago, a GAZ truck was drowned in it. It lies at the depth of about 12 meters and attracts many divers.

Celestial Teeth

Celestial Teeth is a tourist area in the mountains of the Kuznetskiy Alatau, which is located on the border of the Kemerovo Region and the Republic of Khakassia. This place will be loved by those who adore mountains. The highest peak of the Kuznetskiy Alatau — the Staraya Krepost (Old Fortress) plateau — is 2,217 meters.

Here you can enjoy the purest water from brooks and rivers flowing from blue cirque lakes as well as many springs and waterfalls. Also, in this picturesque place, there are many wild animals: bears, moose, goats, roe deer, lynxes, foxes, and squirrels.

Sheregesh

Sheregesh is one of the most popular mountain ski resorts in Russia. Naturally, the most logical time to visit this place is winter, but in summer, you can also find something to do here. You can take a chairlift to the Zelenaya Mountain, try a warm swimming pool with a view of the Mustag Mountain, ride an ATV over rough terrain, or visit the humpback rocks-remnants called Verblyudy («The Camels»). The distance between Kemerovo and Sheregesh is about 370 km.

Tanai Airfield

The Tanai Airfield is mainly focused on skydiving. So, if you are fond of extreme sports, it is your place. At the airfield you can skydive from the height of 4,000 meters with the instructor’s support. But even if you are not eager to test yourself to the limit, you will find something to occupy yourself with: in Tanai, you can visit the open-air swimming pool or a park with helicopters and airplanes.

MUST EAT

Zaboi (Coalface)

This place will be an excellent choice for those guests of the city who want to taste dishes of the Siberian cuisine. Here you can try venison pastrami, venison tartare with juniper, borsch with Siberian deer meat, cutlets made of venison and moose meat, and many other things.

And the interior of the restaurant decorated as a mine will be a great addition to a delicious breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Port42

The unconditional advantage of the Port42 restaurant is its cozy terrace with panoramic windows that outlook the gorgeous view of the Tom River Embankment. In the restaurant, an average bill is about 1,000 rubles, and you will find dishes of the European, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine in the menu.

RE: BRO

The grill-burger bar at 50 Let Oktyabrya Str., 23, will appeal to fans of the American cuisine. All meals and drinks are cooked in its display kitchen. The menu includes 18 types of burgers, 7 variations of meat dishes, as well as a huge range of breakfasts: from curd croquettes with sour cream to fried eggs with salmon. A distinctive feature of this place is self-service. The prices are quite affordable: a substantial lunch will cost you no more than 400 rubles.

Volna (Wave)

One of the oldest restaurants in Kemerovo is located at Tomskaya Str., 5. It is focused not only on classic reception of guests, but also on banquets, weddings, and corporate parties. At the same time, the menu is exceedingly diverse: you can try dishes of the Russian, Pan-Asian, and European cuisine. The average bill is about 1,500 rubles.

Ta Esche Ptitsa (What A Bird)

Perhaps, one of the most unusual places in Kemerovo. If you have ever dreamed of taking a beer bath, you can fulfill your dream in the Ta Esche Ptitsa Bar and Hotel, which was founded by the Lebedev family. Aside from traditional chops with buckwheat or Siberian solyanka (a thick soup of vegetables and meat), you can also taste special beer soup with bacon. In general, fans of local authenticity and originality will appreciate this place.

VOLLEY VIBES

Arena SEC

The Arena is a sports and entertainment complex which used to be a home ground for the Kuzbass Volleyball Club for many years. However, despite its compliance with all modern standards, it will not be the Arena at all to host the World Championship matches: the newest Kuzbass Arena Complex will be built in Kemerovo specifically for the 2022 World Championship.

CLOCKS

The countdown timer to the start of the 2022 Volleyball World Championship was launched on August 26, 2021, on the territory of the Kuzbass Ice Palace.
